Our toothpaste is certified
A traditional and efficient toothpaste
Our organic-certified toothpaste comes from an ancient recipe, since it is mainly made out of Miswak powder.
Miswak comes from the roots of a tree, called Salvadora Persica, used as a toothbrush for millennia. This tree grows naturally in Western Asia.
Miswak has excellent oral and dental hygiene properties. It cleanses the mouth thanks to its antibacterial property, strengthens the gum, prevents dental plaque, and whitens teeth. It also helps to eliminate bad breath.
Our toothpaste is a powder that prevents plaque. The powder manages to clean every part of your mouth making it extra-efficient whilst also protecting your enamel and gums. But don't forget to floss. Using our toothpaste allows you to improve your dental hygiene.
Both of our toothpastes are suitable for :
- sensitive teeth
- bleeding gums
- tooth implants
- braces
- adults and children (over 6)
- pregnant or breastfeeding women
We have chosen to use calcium carbonate which is a very mild abrasive. Using strong abrasives such as bicarbonate isn’t recommend for a daily use. Please also note that the degree of abrasivity is one of the characteristics used by dentists to judge a toothpaste’s quality. Ours is ranked in the first category which is "low abrasivity" meaning that it is of no harm to the enamel, dentine, or cementum.
Our organic toothpaste can be used with a normal toothbrush (like our replaceable head toothbrush) or with electric toothbrushes.
Our toothpaste composition
Our toothpaste is handmade in our workshop, using traditional methods based on an ancestral recipe that only uses four ingredients.
- White clay: a mild abrasive, cleans without damaging the enamel, and sanitises the mouth. Origin: France, Cosmos certified.
- Miswak powder: cultivated in an ecological way, Miswak powder protects the gums, keeps bad breath under control, and helps to remove plaque. Origin: India, organic certified.
- Calcium carbonate: a very mild abrasive that stimulates the gum through a daily use and remineralises the teeth. Origin: Germany, Cosmos certified.
FOR THE MENTHOL VERSION:
- Mint crystals: used in a small quantity, they freshen and eliminate bad breath. Obtained by crystallisation of mint essential oil. Origin: India, organic certified.
Our toothpaste has no taste, gives you fresh breath, and clean teeth thanks to the menthol. Some have even noticed their teeth whitening thanks to the Miswak's scaling properties.
It doesn't contain any added fluoride or any other controversial ingredient.
What they don’t tell you about industrial toothpaste
Adding fluoride to toothpaste is a very controversial practice. The quantity ingested daily can't be precisely measured and controlled. Overconsumption of fluoride can cause health problems.
As fluoride is already present in our daily environment (in water and vegetables) we decided not to add any artificially to our toothpaste.
Please note that Miswak contains small quantities of natural fluoride, just as some vegetables do. Tests showed a fluoride concentration of 147ppm in our toothpaste. A quantity which is way lower than conventional toothpaste (1500ppm for an adult toothpaste), but which seemed to us to be sufficient along with other daily input.
Many toothpastes, in supermarkets or homemade ones, contain baking soda. You need to be careful with this ingredient as it is very abrasive. That is why we chose calcium carbonate for our toothpaste, as it is a lot milder.
How to use our toothpaste?
To use our powdered toothpaste, you can either sprinkle it directly onto your toothbrush or gently tap the tube to pour some powder in the lid. Then, dip in your dry toothbrush. If needed, you can dampen your toothbrush afterwards or take some water in your mouth.
Our organic toothpaste gives your teeth a deep clean, leaving them fresh and white. Your mouth is also thoroughly cleaned. You will have an extra-fresh breath that will last much longer than industrially-produced toothpaste.
Caution: the menthol version is not suitable for people under homoeopathic treatments and children under 6 because of the mint crystals, considered an essential oil. There is a fragrance-free version for children under 6 (who can spit), and people under homoeopathic treatments.
For both versions of the toothpaste (menthol and fragrance-free), do not swallow it, your child needs to be old enough to spit the toothpaste out.
We don't hide the fact that it can be a little disorienting the first few times you use it, because it is unlike any standard or industrially-produced toothpaste. It doesn't foam, but we can assure you that you will get used to it very quickly.
A refillable container
Our powered toothpaste is packed in a recyclable cardboard tube. Our product range is now free from any plastic to reduce our consumption of this polluting material.
Our toothpaste is refillable. If you already have a pot (ours or a sterilised jam jar), you just need to fill it up by buying the refills alone. All our refills are in entirely compostable brown paper bags.
To refill, you simply need to pull the top of the pot off, pour the amount of powder needed inside and close it. Our pot also comes with a repositionable cardboard seal so you can close it hermetically if you need to take your toothpaste tube with you. We recommend using it only in this case to not damage it too fast.
Are there any contraindications for the mentholated toothpaste?
The mentholated version of our toothpaste is not suitable for people using a homoeopathic treatment and children under 6. The mentholated version contains mint crystals, considered as an essential oil. If you fall under one of these categories, you can use our fragrance-free version.
For both versions, children must able to spit the toothpaste out as it should not be swallowed.
Is your toothpaste suitable for sensitive teeth/gums?
Yes, our toothpaste is suitable for sensitive teeth and gums. We have chosen to use calcium carbonate which is a very mild abrasive. Using strong abrasives, such as bicarbonate, isn’t recommend for a daily use. Please also note that the degree of abrasivity is one of the characteristics used by dentists to judge a toothpaste’s quality. Ours is ranked in the first category which is "low abrasivity" with an RDA of 57,23. This means that it is of no harm to the enamel, dentine, or cementum.
Does your toothpaste contain fluoride?
There is no added fluoride in our toothpaste. Fluoride is already present in your daily environment, in water for example. Please note that Miswak contains small quantities of natural fluoride, just as some vegetables do. Tests have shown a fluoride contraction of 147ppm in our toothpaste. This is why it doesn't seem necessary to add more to our toothpaste recipe.
Why choose natural toothpaste?
Many controversial ingredients are present in conventional toothpaste such as titanium dioxide or sulphates. By choosing toothpaste with a natural composition, you can be sure this product is safer for you and the environment.
How to choose a natural toothpaste?
Many different formats exist: solid, paste, powder like our miswak toothpaste. You can choose the one that suits you best, without any controversial ingredients. By choosing our toothpowder, you are opting for a zero waste lifestyle. In addition to our refillable cardboard tube, we offer kraft refills which you can use with your own container.
How is the Comme Avant toothpaste powder made?
Our miswak toothpaste powder is made in our workshop. We mix the different ingredients in a dedicated room and then pack our 45g tubes and refills with machines that help our packing agents to fill the right amount in each pot.
